Chinese New Year Introduction

Chinese New Year, also called Spring Festival, has more than 4,000 years of history. It is the

 grandest and the most important annual event for Chinese people. It's one of the traditional

 festivals, it is the time for the whole families to reunite together, which is similar with Christmas

 Day to the westerners

2016 Chinese New Year falls on February 8. It is the Year of the Monkey, and the offcial holidays

 is from Feb 8-14th. 



How Chinese prepare and What they do during the holidays?

The preparation starts 7 days before the Chinese New Year's Eve, and the holiday celebration

 will last to the 15th day of the first lunar month which is also Lantern Festival (Can check here

 about Lantern Festival http://mp.weixin.qq.com/s?__biz=MzA5NTM0ODYwMQ==&mid=402792474&idx=2&sn=78234c881c20b4fb73ff10b2a41f7def#rd).Chinese have different things to do on each day during Chinese New Year. Among these

 days, the Eve and the first day are the peak time, when people will have big reunion dinners and

 set off firework.


**Dec. 23rd of Lunar Date (Feb. 1st 2016 in Solar Date)

   --Worshiping the Kitchen God

As the legend goes, there is a kitchen god in each house who isresponsible for the kitchen and

 oversees the conduct of the family.On this day, the kitchen god returns to Heaven to report

 theconducts of the family to the Emperor of Heaven. Therefore,worshipping the kitchen god

 aims to “please him。” People put outsome sweet and sticky foods, such as rice dumplings

 and maltedsugar. In this way, the lips of the kitchen god will stucktogether, and he cannot report

 any wrong doings of the family. Thus the family can lead an auspicious life。


**Dec. 24rd of Lunar Date (Feb. 2nd 2016 in Solar Date)

   --Clean up the house thoroughly

As Chinese Traditions, it's not just clean up the house, it's also menas clean up all the bad

 things for the year and everything will go better in the new year!

**Dec. 26-27th of Lunar Date (Feb. 4-5th 2016 in Solar Date)

 --Shopping for Chinese New Year Items

Before Chinese New Year, need to prepare food and snacks for Chinese New Year when

 relatives come for visiting. Also Chinese will buy new stuffs for home--New year, new start,

 everything new!


**Last Day of Lunar Date (Feb. 7th 2016 in Solar Date)

 --Chinese New Year Eve

It's the last day before the new year coming, on this day, all the families will prepare for the big

 reunion dinner, make dumplings, pasting Spring Festival Couplets, watching TV gala after

 dinner and setting off fireworks to celebrate the new year. 

Yasui

On the Chinese New Year Eve, normally elders will prepare red envelope with money inside (Also

 called Hongbao in Chinese) for kids, which will protect the kids from the evils and grow up heathly. 

Shousui

stay up late on the new year eve to see the new year.  Also there is a saying " kai men hong",

 from the words meaning, it's " can see all the red when you open the door (red means good for

 Chinese)" which means everything will go well in the new year, especially work/career/business.

 (in the countryside, every familiy will play firecrackers before open the door, so it will be all red

 on the ground. But now as city pollution, firecrackers are forbidden ). 



**First Day of New Year in Lunar Date (Feb. 8th 2016 in Solar Date), It's also called "Chuyi"

Setting off firecrakers--as said above in "Shousui" about the firecrakers. Before normally we play

 it in the early morning when first people in the family wake up, but now most people like

 watching TV gala, play majiang to shousui and then in the midnight when the new year coming,

 people will play the firecrakers. 

Also on this day, people will also eating dumplings and visiting relatives 


**Second Day of New Year in Lunar Date (Feb. 9th 2016 in Solar Date), It's also called "Chu'er"

Worshiping the God of Wealth, married daughters returning home



** Other days during the Spring Festival, normally we also visit relatives and friends


**15th Day of New Year in Lunar Date (Feb. 22nd 2016 in Solar Date), It's also called "Lantern Festival"
